Weber State EAST (COAST)

Weber State University’s College of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology (EAST), formerly known as College of Applied Science and Technology (COAST), had no media presence in any form.  They needed a way to disseminate information about all of the great programs, students, teachers, and events that go on in the college every semester.  They needed a way to actively engage students, faculty, and donors while informing them of their happenings.  To accomplish this a social media presence was established on multiple platforms, a digital and printed newsletter was created, and enhanced documentation of college affairs was implemented.

College students are continuously connected to social media where they get much of their news and information including what is going on in their school.  To capitalize on this, social media pages including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were created to allow current information about the college to be shared.  A newsletter was produced in both digital and printed formats which compiled the best stories and highlights from the semester.  Teachers were encouraged to talk about the happenings in the college to their students and encourage their participation with a prize of being featured in the newsletter and scholarship opportunities.  Increased documentation of events was established by dedicating photographers and writers for each event.

The social media pages which included Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram quickly became the second most liked and interacted with pages amongst all the colleges at Weber State University.  Only the College of Performing Arts performed better.  The newsletters became the go-to for updates on the college and student achievements.  Faculty began talking about it and got students excited about the possibility of being highlighted for their achievements.  The responsibilities of maintaining the information is delegated to students in the college every year so as to provide learning opportunities and real world experience.

Events & Activities

Each event hosted by a department in the college was attended by a photographer who captured the students and faculty in action.  The events spanned form Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach programs for the youth and pumpkin bowling to raise money for Shriner’s Hospital patients to robotics and auto body competitions as well as everything in between.  By visually documenting the events it was easier for people to understand the breadth of what EAST (COAST) has to offer.

Web & Social Media Presence

The official college web page was revamped to include the latest information on activities and events.  Links to the newly created newsletter were also housed here.  Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages were created and populated to showcase student achievements along with information for perspective students.  Since these various mediums would be managed by future student interns on a rotating basis, it was important to create the framework or style guide for the pages.  This allowed for a seamless transition from student to student each year.
